Hysterectomy is a frequently performed gynecologic operation. The ureter is at risk of injury during hysterectomy because of its proximity to the pelvic organs, as well as its anatomic path relative to the external iliac arteries, the pelvic brim, the uterine arteries and the cardinal ligament. Retrospective studies have found that the risk of injury to the ureters approaches 1%. Because a typical gynecologist performs numerous hysterectomies over the course of a career, most have encountered this complication. What happens to these accounts and policies when the original owner dies? The investment or insurance firm gets the first chance to determine what happens. On many retirement plans, for example, a spouse is often the default beneficiary, even if not named on a beneficiary form. If the deceased has no spouse, then the plan assets may just become part of that person’s estate.
